Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research offers three degree programs: Master of Social Service (MSS), Master of Law and Social Policy (MLSP), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). In addition, students can undertake a specialization in Child and Family Well-Being within the MSS program, and obtain a Home and School Visitor certification either concurrently with the MSS degree or on a post-Master’s basis.

The School is a challenging and nurturing learning environment, and our interdisciplinary faculty is committed to preparing graduates from all degree programs for leadership positions within the social work profession.

The MSS program, with concentrations in Clinical Social Work, Social Service Management, and Policy Planning and Advocacy, emphasizes skill development, the integration of theory and practice, an understanding of the organizational, policy, and historical context in which intervention occurs, and the role of self-reflection and critical feedback.

The MLSP program develops competencies in legal reasoning and analysis, introduces students to legal and administrative processes, emphasizes skill development in legal research, advocacy, and conflict resolution, and examines the role of law in addressing such issues as equal treatment, inequality, and social reform.

A field instruction component complements the course work for both MSS and MLSP candidates and allows students to enhance their knowledge and skills through supervised experiences in private and public agencies and organizations.

The PhD program prepares graduates for careers in teaching, research, and administration. Course work balances theoretical training and research and the dissertation provides students with an opportunity to do extensive work in their particular area of interest. Many students have an opportunity to engage in research with faculty colleagues and serve as teaching assistants and instructors in the MSS and MLSP programs.
