Cynthia Bisman

Cynthia Bisman completed her undergraduate education at Queens College, City University of New York. The University of Kansas granted her MSW and PhD, and the Menninger Foundation her family therapy certification. She has over thirty-five years of post-master’s experience including practice with severely mentally ill people, veterans and multi-problem families, as well as in public welfare, consultation and supervision.


Bisman’s many articles, books and conference presentations reflect her research interests in professional socialization, development of practice theory and social work values and ethics.  Among other activities, she is the US Associate Editor for a new international journal, Ethics and Social Welfare; provides a range of editorial functions for journals in the US and UK; chairs site teams for accreditation of social work programs; and serves on ethics panels.  Currently revising her practice book to infuse a values and social justice perspective, Bisman is using case material gleaned from recent interviews with social workers in the US and UK.


She teaches foundation and clinical practice, theories of social work practice and family therapy and in her role as faculty liaison to Praxis seeks to enrich undergraduate students’ community outreach and service.
