Adolescent Body Image and Sexuality: Their Impact on Relationships, Self-Esteem and Treatment

The adolescent developmental period is one in  which there is progression towards becoming more resourceful , forming identity and self-worth, recognizing choices, making decisions, and establishing peer and  romantic relationships.  Adolescents and their sense of their sexuality, their feelings about their body image and their body size relate directly to behavior and the establishment of relationships. Participants of this workshop are introduced to the latest research and statistics regarding adolescent sexuality, body image and self-esteem to help them understand the dynamics and cultural influences on adolescents and how to support them in their development. Diversity and the need for sensitivity will be addressed by drawing attention to how differences in race, ethnicity, religion and socioeconomic status affect these issues. Information on specific statistics, behaviors and norms as well as information for intervention and treatment are addressed. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 1) understand adolescent developmental dynamics; 2) discuss the importance and emergence of new stronger peer and romantic relationships and their effect on later bonds, attachments, and self-esteem; 3) define current trends in sexual norms and sexual behaviors among adolescents in the United States; 4) assess and provide strategies for helping adolescents understand the implications for their choices and behaviors; and 5) understand cultural influences that affect adolescents’ self-esteem, body image and sexuality. This workshop is appropriate for post-master’s practitioners with experience and/ or policy development work within social service agencies and schools.

Stephanie Newberg, MEd, MSW, LCSW, is in private practice in Bryn Mawr and serves as a consultant to private and public schools. She also serves as a field liaison at Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. Stephanie specializes in work with adolescents and their families, and has made a variety of presentations on adolescent developmental issues and ways to support families through this life stage.
