Ms. Takenaka's research interest centers on the cross-national movements of people, goods, information, and capital and their impacts on social relations and group boundaries. She has traveled extensively, and her previous research involved Peru, Japan, Mexico, and the East and West Coasts of the U.S.

Currently, she is conducting research in three areas: (1) secondary migration from the U.K. to the U.S., (2) Asian migration from Latin America to New York and Los Angeles, and (3) the Peruvian diaspora. Her teaching interests are in international migration, race and ethnic relations, Asian American studies and Asians in the Americas, urban sociology, and ethnographic research methods.

Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted. And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well - And ain't I a woman?
