Description / Descripción

This course will introduce the beginning students to listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. Use of English will be limited in the class! The goal is to move into a Spanish-only environment as soon as possible, to maximize students' practice of the language and to expand their cultural competency. The approach to the Hispanic world cultures will be an important component of the course.

Requirements / Requisitos

1. Texts

Mandatory:
Knorre, M. et al. Puntos de partida (Textbook). 8th ed.
Sabló-Yates, María. Puntos de partida (Online Lab. Manual)
Recommended:
Spinelli, Emily. English Grammar for Students of Spanish (in the reference section of the bookstore).

2. Attendance and participation

Please bring to each class: your brain, your enthusiasm, and your energy. I expect every student to be very active. Language learning requires a serious input from the student, so I am asking you to be prepared for class, to participate willingly, to study on a regular basis, and to be ready to answer all questions. Regular attendance in class is required. No more than 6 unjustified absences will be accepted. Your participation grade will be drastically lowered after that.

3. Language laboratory

The students are responsible for completing the online laboratory manual as part of the homework. Please check the online syllabus for deadlines.

4. Tests

Quizzes: Students will have seven (7) quizzes (pruebas) in class (See syllabus for dates).
Exams: We will have 2 exams during the semester and one final exam. Each exam will contain an oral component.

5. Cultural presentation

In groups of two, the students will be required to do a short presentation in English about one aspect of the Hispanic culture. This will probably be the only instance when English will be accepted in class! One country has been selected for each chapter of the book (see syllabus). Primary information can be found at the Puntos de partida's website. Specific instructions on the theme and format of the presentation may be found in the course website. Please note that your presentation topic should be approved by me.
