In 1997, the McPherson Fund For Excellence was established to honor President Emeritus Mary Patterson McPherson's years of contribution to the Bryn Mawr community, and to inspire outstanding faculty and staff members, graduate students, and undergraduates with the McPherson Awards.
Each year, the College honors McPherson Fellows from the faculty, the staff, and the graduate and undergraduate student bodies. Recipients are recognized for excellence and service to the community, either within or beyond the boundaries of this institution.

The Newberry Award
In May, 2007 the Staff Association Representatives announced the creation of the Newberry Award. An annual award like the McPherson Award, this award will be given annually to a staff member, who embodies the principles of the Green Plan, by putting those principles into action. The award, which will be $1,000.00, will be funded by a donation of $500 from the proceeds of our end of year sale and by a matching gift from the College. Nominations for this award will be solicited early each spring with a form similar to the one used to nominate people for the McPherson award. Staff members will be able to nominate themselves or a colleague for the award. We hope to have a small group of environmentally concerned faculty decide the winner. We have named this award for former undergraduate dean, Jan Newberry, who was the founder of the Green Plan Committee and who felt it was very important to include staff members in community planning projects. The first Newberry Award was awarded in May 2008.
