Science for College: A Hands-On Preparation for College Science

June 22th — July 12th, 2008

The Program

"I think the program has allowed me to see the interdisciplinary aspects of science more clearly than taking specific science courses in school. It has taught me that that writing about science isn’t only lab reports."*

" [the program] made me look at science from a different perspective, more open-minded approach."*

This interdisciplinary program is designed for high school young women who are interested in analyzing our natural world and better understanding science as an interplay of language, experiments and processing information to discover new concepts. The program is structured to provide opportunities for students to explore a wide variety of subspecialties in the sciences, including biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and psychology.

Students will be encouraged to learn about each subspecialty and to make connections between core concepts and practices across all of them, with discussions of technology and its place in science woven throughout.

A hands-on preparation for college science, the program draws on Bryn Mawr's extensive resources in the sciences: world-renowned science faculty, state-of-the-art laboratories, and dedicated, creative teachers, and it interweaves academic, recreational and college-preparatory dimensions to create an integrated experience. All aspects of Science for College, including seminars, guest lectures by Bryn Mawr science faculty, labs, tutorials, field trips and personal interactions, work together to support a community of experienced and novice scientists.

Science for College is a unique opportunity for high school young women to:

  • Meet and work with distinguished scientists in psychology, chemistry, and geology
  • Build their analytical skills through working closely with an instructor and a Bryn Mawr science major
  • Be active and self-directed learners working to integrate lectures, complete labs, and develop portfolios of their work in a supportive environment
  • Collaborate with other young women pursuing similar interests

FIELD TRIPS & WEEKEND ACTIVITIES
During the week, students will take field trips related to their academic work or to visit area colleges. Each weekend, students will visit cultural and historic institutions in and near Philadelphia and participate in a variety of other recreational activities both on- and off-campus.

FINANCIAL AID
Science for College is grateful to Gene Miller for his generosity in providing 3 scholarships for young women from urban environments who attend public schools to join us this year. If you are interested in applying for one of these scholarships, please indicate your interest on your application.
