British artist Rachel Whiteread creates large-scale sculptures and installations by casting everyday objects and domestic interiors to explore complex notions of presence and absence, memory and loss, and the relationship of the body to forms in space. In 1993, she won Britain's coveted Turner Prize, and her work was included in the 1995 Carnegie International. Whiteread's Untitled (Domestic), 2002, a plaster cast of a three-story staircase was recently acquired by the museum and is on view in the Hall of Sculpture. Whiteread's appearance was co-sponsored by the Carnegie Mellon University School of Art.
