Alice Oh, Artist's Statement

Eight years ago I had the opportunity to study the behavior and morphology of infected blood cells under a microscope. I observed small drops of contaminated blood at three thousand times their actual size. Initially, I saw numerous healthy cells vibrating and floating in glowing plasma. Then the cells began to move rapidly in a chaotic circular motion as the infection spread. Within minutes, the virus had overwhelmed all the cells.

At the microscopic level colors work with a different standard of value and saturation. In the recent year, forms and colors from nature as seen under a microscope have largely influenced my painting. These forms as seen enlarged a thousand times under a microscope are brightly lit and glowing with vivid light and color. In my painting, color is one of the most important forms of expression. Color creates special depth, both emotionally with movement and creates a sense of symbolic importance in nature. I am currently using color in terms of its saturation rather than for difference in value. I wish to continue to discover and better understand color through the intensive and creative development of my work.

"The three dimensional painting on Architectural Parasite: from the floor, off the wall and into the ceiling" - installation is conceived from the process of working with repetitious ellipse forms on a rectangular canvas that gradually led me to question the space that the forms occupy. I began to experiment with the ellipse forms and discovered the relevance of the architectural spaces. Currently, my hours in studio are consumed with researching new materials and finding appropriate applications for the strange and unfamiliar mediums. The delivery of the three dimensional ellipse forms are new, challenging, and exciting and it embodies a gradual and slow learning process. The Philadelphia Art Alliance exhibition gave me an opportunity to observe the paintings and the three-dimensional wall installation in a unique architectural setting.

I am constantly observing and recording every phase of my life. I believe that the journey through which I interact with nature has to begin from within. I am nature-inseparable from my environs. With painting I am able to examine challenge and discover myself in nature. I have learned that everything in nature is dependent on each other; together they create a greater rhythm. I hope to manifest and convey the wisdom and beauty of nature in my work.
