We have (and continue to) read in preparation for this Celebration. We are looking, of course, at Women Make Movies films, directors, and the organization itself. We are also looking at a wide range of interdisciplinary texts which intersect with the themes and topics of the films. Feminist visual culture is a central focus with additional attention to feminist art, feminist theory, feminist performance and more general theories of identity, representation, and power. We've added quotations from the texts we've found most useful and, as such, this page becomes a useful sampler on the topics above.
We've tried to stay with material in print since 1990 and with attention to on-line resources. All are encouraged to make suggestions of readings.
Part of the intention behind this Celebration is to gather and contextualize materials which would prove useful in classes. We've been looking for passages in contemporary scholarship which resonate with the concepts and topics central to Women Make Movies films and which would make for good class discussion. We started with the question, "What makes a film a Women Make Movies film?" We've extended that discussion quickly to include questions of identity, feminist aesthetics, theories of audience, the contested categories of "women's experience," and the representation of and the issues surrounding, for example, mother-daughter relationships, transnational lesbian identity, and the body. We look at feminist politics, representation, and art, with a focus on gender and cinematic technique and gesture. This is an on-line anthology in process, to be made more final in May 2002. We appreciate suggestions, corrections, and comments.
We are collecting links to on-line material reflective of the issues above. Send along your suggestions and make use of what we have collected here.
