Dance Technique Courses
Many students come to Bryn Mawr with experience in technique and performance and our classes support their continued growth in dance. But we are equally interested in providing a solid and engaging introduction to dance for those who have had little or no experience.
Each year we offer: three levels of Ballet, three levels of Modern, two levels of Jazz, African dance forms, Hip-hop, Movement Improvisation, Tap and social dance forms such as salsa or swing. Advanced Ballet offers an optional pointe barre, at the discretion of the instructor.
We also offer, on a rotating basis, courses in Rhythm and Style (intro to Flamenco and Tap) and Gesture of Dance (intro to Classical Indian and Polynesian Hula). Students at Bryn Mawr and Haverford can also take advantage of classes at our consortium institution, Swarthmore, and there is some tuition support for dancers at the advanced level in a range of techniques to take additional classes in nearby studios or in Philadelphia. Advanced and intermediate classes are offered twice a week for an hour and a half.
All technique and ensemble courses can be taken for PE credit (2 PE credits per full semester) or students can elect to take intermediate and advanced technique courses for academic credit (.5 academic credit for a full semester). Students can receive .5 academic credit for beginning level technique classes through ARTD 136-139, Introduction to Dance Techniques I & II. We generally advise first semester frosh to wait until second semester of their first year to enroll in technique for academic credit unless they are taking ARTD 136 or 137.
Students can continue to take any courses at their level of competence without pursuing a major or minor. We encourage and support participation at the level and intensity that is most appropriate for a students' experience and interest during their four years at Bryn Mawr.
Note: For Fall, 2017, Composition, Seminar/Lecture courses, and Ensemble auditions begin the week of Tuesday, September 5; technique classes and ensemble rehearsals begin the week of Monday, September 11.
