The Center for Visual Culture welcomes Prof. Jie Shi, who will present "The Vision of Immortality in a Princely Stone Sarcophagus in Sixth-Century China."
Jie Shi will discuss how Prince Yuan Mi’s lavishly engraved stone sarcophagus, dated to 532 CR, exemplifies a hitherto little understood Chinese visual strategy, i.e., using the imagery of diagonal gaze to make a persuasive visual argument to redeem the deceased’s tainted fame in the afterlife.
Jie Shi is the Assistant Professor of History of Art on the Jye Chu Lectureship in Chinese Studies, Bryn Mawr College.
Refreshments will be served. Visit the Visual Culture Blog for more information.
