Building Facts During COVID-19

Updated February 2021
To lower the risk of transmission in all spaces, the College will use CDC cleaning protocols, ventilation, lower density, relocate classroom and workspaces, and employ remote learning and work opportunities.

Occupancies Guidelines | Restrooms Reminders | Cleaning | Ventilation | Building-Specific Information

Occupancies Guidelines

  • All offices and rooms without central ventilation will have an occupancy of one person, meaning that only the principal occupant should spend time in these rooms and that meetings with other people should be conducted virtually or in another space that is adequately ventilated.
  • The occupancies of all classrooms and common spaces will be posted on each room and reservable space occupancies will be published in EMS.
  • All elevators are single occupancy.
  • All pantries/kitchenettes and break rooms shall be occupied by no more than one person at a time.
  • Additional building-specific occupancy guidance is included below.

Restrooms Reminders

  • Occupants should maintain a 6' separation or maintain a partition barrier while in the restroom.
  • One person at a time should be using the sink.
  • Wastebasket will be placed by the door to allow for the disposal of a paper towel used to open the door and exit after washing hands.

Cleaning

The Housekeeping team has adopted cleaning and disinfection protocols that comply with guidelines from the CDC for preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

  • Hand sanitizer will be located at the building entrance.
  • Restrooms and high touch surfaces will be cleaned twice daily by Housekeeping staff as needed based on occupancy.
  • Wipes will be provided to clean surfaces in classroom spaces by occupants.
  • Housekeeping will continue to clean offices. Office occupants will be responsible for their own desks and keyboards.
  • Central waste receptacles will be located in common areas to allow occupants to discard trash.
  • Housekeeping will continue to empty recycling cans located by an individual’s desk.
  • Cleaning supplies will be provided to each building to allow employees to clean their personal space and to clean areas of common use such as copiers and break areas after use. Cleaning supplies will come with instructions which should be followed. Building advocates will coordinate supply distribution.

Ventilation

There are a variety of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems throughout the Campus. They vary by building based on the date of construction and space use. See the building-specific information below. If you have any questions regarding individual buildings or spaces, please contact your Building Advocate or Nina Bisbee, Director of Facilities Services nbisbee@brynmawr.edu).

Facilities Services has employed multiple strategies to improve our buildings’ HVAC system to help address COVID-19 health concerns. One or more of the following strategies have been implemented: increase of outdoor air as feasible; increased ventilation rates as feasible; improved filtration and limiting occupancies commensurate with the capabilities of the systems.

The College has replaced and upgraded air filters. Ventilation system will be running at maximum capacities and for maximum duration based on weather conditions.

The original system that covers the majority of the building including most of the offices provides heating and cooling by conditioning the air in each room without a ventilation system that provides sufficient outside air. The rooms served by this system have an occupancy of one person and include the entire lower level of Old Library (accept the study carols in room 11), and rooms 114, 115, 118, 120-131, 134-150, 204, 205, 209, 210, 212-224, 236-249, 251 and 252. The third system is the Carpenter library system that picks up a number of spaces in Old library and also provides outside air and filtration to those rooms including room 11, (collections rooms), 227-233, 235, and 301-311.

Park Science Complex

  • Ventilation: There are a variety of systems throughout the Park Science complex that vary by wing based on the date of construction and even by room due to subsequent isolated upgrades.

    Old Park Hall is generally served by a system that does not provide outside air including rooms 160, 163, 163A, 164, 165, 165A, 193, 194, 195, 196, 197, 261, 262, 263, 264, 286, 287, 288, 289, 290, 291, 292, and 293. This also includes rooms 384, 367, 380, 381, 382, 383 (the reading Room), and 385 in the current Collier Library. Occupancy in these spaces is limited to one person.

The Physics/Math wing including the connection Old Park Hall is a combination of new systems installed for individual labs and in phase I of the Park Science Renovation project and older systems. The new central systems add outside air and provide filtration. The older systems recirculate the air in each and provide filtration in rooms that have individual fan coil units.  The rooms served by these older systems have an occupancy of one person and include rooms 130, 131, 132, 133, 138, 138A, 138B, 139, 142, 148, 234, 237, 240, 328, 329, 330, 331, 339, 340, 341, 342, 343, 343A, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 348A, and 349.

The Biology wing including the connection to Old Park Hall is also served by multiple systems. Most of the systems in this wing provide outside air and filtration. The remaining areas of this wing that do not provide outside air and should be limited to single person occupancy include rooms 1, 1A, 1B, 2, 3, 4, 5, 224, 225, 226, 227, 228, and 229.

The Chemistry wing is served by a central system that provides 100% outside air with no recirculation of indoor air.

The new Atrium addition is served by a central system that provides outside air and filtration.

Rooms 100, 200 and 300 will be provided with a temporary system that will provide outside air to the space.

  • Occupancies/Special Use Rooms: The rooms listed above having no ventilation will have an occupancy of one person. Rooms that can be scheduled for such meetings in the EMS reservation system include: 252, 255, 336, 337, and 363C. The occupancy of the lab 160 will be two people for safety with masks and the occupancy of lab 163 will be two people with the hood in operation. The Collier Library reading room will be used for circulation to access the geology labs only. Room 229 and 278 will be designated as a lecture capture room for faculty to record remote classes. Rooms 139, 142, 227, 228, 234, 264, 328, 339, 349 and 384 will essentially be closed. Rooms 139, 142, and 264 will be used to store excess furniture. The other spaces can be managed by the departments for specialized single occupancy uses.

  • Building Advocate: Billie Jo Ember, 610-526-5187.

Schwartz Gym

  • Ventilation: The Schwartz Gym is served by several air handling units. Those that serve the pool, Gymm and fitness areas provide outside air. The pool does have HVAC challenges with respect to air circulation. The HVAC systems serving the locker rooms and coaching areas do not provide outside air and as a result, occupancies will be limited.
  • Occupancies/Special Use Rooms: The locker rooms will be closed and will remain unoccupied. The pool occupancy will be limited. A single locker room restroom per day may be available to the swimmers for emergencies. The training room is limited to an occupancy of two including the inner office and the training room itself. Most training activities will be conducted in the Gym. Individual offices will have an occupancy of one. The bull pen, the conference room, and the equipment/laundry room will each have an occupancy of one. The Gym will have a maximum occupancy limit of 50 based on the HVAC systems. However, based on weather conditions occupancies should be coordinated with the Facilities Department. The fitness area and multi-purpose room will not be occupied until further notice. Appropriate occupancies will be determined at that time.
  • Building Advocate: Courtney Morris, 610-526-7583.

Taylor Hall

  • Ventilation: All rooms have filtration via the heat pumps in each space. These do not introduce fresh air from outside so you may open windows if you want outside air. Classrooms D, E, F, G and the 2nd floor Seminar Room do have ventilation systems that provide outside air and may be used for multiple occupancy as permitted by the 6' distancing rule.
  • Occupancies/Special Use Rooms: There will be no shared offices.
