Supplemental International Travel Insurance for Faculty and Staff
The College carries a supplemental insurance policy that provides international travel accident coverage throughout the year for faculty and staff traveling for purposes related to their work at the College. The policy covers emergency medical costs incurred during business travel after a $100 deductible. The policy also covers 100% of the cost of medical emergency evacuation. Emergency medical arrangements must be coordinated by the insurance provider in order for services and costs to be insurable. The policy does not cover routine care and is in excess to any coverage provided by your primary medical insurance policy.
The insurance carrier requires an annual report of all travel outside the United States and also requires pre-notification for travel to certain countries. In order to comply with the terms of the policy, please notify Maria Wiemken in the Treasurer’s Office by email at email@example.com in advance of your international trip. Include the dates of departure and return; the cities and countries where your work will be performed; and the reason for the travel (e.g., research, course development, international initiatives, fund raising). You may also complete the International Business Travel Insurance Enrollment Form and send it to Maria Wiemken as an email attachment. Upon notification of your travel plans, you will be sent a current insurance ID card with the policy and emergency contact numbers as well as important information about the coverage and many services available through the policy.
The travel insurance policy does not cover the personal travel of faculty and staff members. However, family members traveling with Bryn Mawr faculty and staff during College related trips may be enrolled under the policy. The cost is $40 per month per family member (the minimum cost is the cost for one month even if the trip is for less than one month). Enrollment of family members is required in advance of the travel. Please complete the International Business Travel Insurance Enrollment Form and send it with payment to Maria Wiemken, Treasurer’s Office, by campus mail.
Other International Coverage
The College has the following insurance for claims which might occur while traveling on College related business. If you have any experience while traveling abroad that might involve an insurance claim, please contact Maria Wiemken (firstname.lastname@example.org) as soon as possible.
- Auto Liability – When renting a car outside the U.S., its territories, Puerto Rico or Canada, both liability and physical damage coverage must be purchased in the local country or jurisdiction. Whether or not the purchase of car rental insurance is required by local law, vehicle rental insurance should always be purchased for domestic or international rentals. The minimum limits to be purchased, equivalent in U.S. dollars, are: $10,000 each person/$20,000 each accident for Bodily Injury Liability, and $10,000 each accident for Property Damage Liability. The College’s international automobile insurance provides only for excess insurance over local coverage for an auto liability claim involving an employee, volunteer or student while traveling abroad. The coverage applies only when the local coverage is exhausted.
- Workers Compensation, General Liability and Property insurance are also carried to cover Bryn Mawr employees, volunteers, and students for personal injuries while working abroad or to cover loss or damage to College property abroad.
