Position Description: The Bryn Mawr College Special Collections Department seeks applicants for a part-time position assisting in the assessment of the rare book collections. The work will involve item-level inspection of books in the collection; recording of basic descriptive metadata; preliminary assessment of each item’s priority for further cataloging; and catalog enrichment of high-priority books. The Project Assistant reports to the Project Cataloguer, and works with the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts and the Director of Special Collections. This is an excellent opportunity to work closely with a large number of books from the hand-press period and the 19th century, and is therefore ideal for those who may be considering entering a special collections career.
Required: Bachelor’s degree; experience working in libraries and with library catalogues; ability to work with close attention to detail; ability to lift 20 lbs and reach top shelves of standard library stacks, either unassisted or with ladder.
Preferred: Currently enrolled in, or recent graduate of, Masters program in Library Science; cataloging classwork and experience; familiarity with MARC, AACR2, DCRM (B), RDA, and RBMS Controlled Vocabularies; basic knowledge of book history; reading/bibliographic knowledge of European languages other than English; experience with OCLC Connexion and Millenium.
