The world continues to experience an unprecedented number of natural disasters including flooding in South Asia and Africa, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Maria and deadly earthquakes in Mexico. There is certainly no hierarchy of need as each of these communities is experiencing extreme loss, instability, and uncertainty following these extreme events. It can be difficult to know where to start when faced with such devastation. LILAC|Civic Engagement stands with our students, their families and friends, and the communities affected. Below please see some suggested global organizations that are providing support and disaster relief in partnership with the local communities in the affected areas.
Often our first instinct is to either try to travel to the affected area, to offer direct assistance or to start a collection drive—both genuinely thoughtful ideas stemming from a compassionate desire to help, but generally not the most helpful or practical responses in a situation like this. Supporting professional organizations and groups rooted within the affected communities are usually the best ways to provide support and ensure that those affected by the disaster will receive the help they need.
LILAC|Civic Engagement has compiled a list of organizations that accept online monetary donations to provide direct assistance to the individuals and communities affected. Ranging from national to local and addressing varied needs of the communities, each of these organizations will direct monetary donations to on the ground relief efforts.
Another important resource each of us has to share is ourselves. Reaching out to members of the Bryn Mawr College community who are from the affected areas or have family and friends there and offering emotional support is just as important as supporting relief organizations. Providing a listening ear and showing compassion to those worried about their family, the state of their home, their communities, their pets—that is a form of giving, too, and is equally important in times of disaster.
