An Introduction to our Major Reps
Class of 2022
Hello! My name is Marye (pronounced like Margie), and I am a math major. I was born in Orlando, Fla., but grew up in Boston, Mass. I first realized my love for math when I noticed that math was the only class I didn't dread going to in high school. I am a visual learner, so I like looking for patterns and creating visuals to help me understand concepts. Whenever I struggle with math, I know I can count on the Bryn Mawr Math Department to help me and offer support, so I would also like to offer my support and help to whoever needs it. Outside of math, I am Vice President of Mujeres*. I also love being lazy with my cat, Oreo, watching movies, drawing/painting, and hanging out with my friends while we do nothing.
Hi, I’m Allison Eckert. I’m from Lawrence, Kan. I’m majoring in Classical Languages as well as math. I wasn't very interested in math until my first semester at Bryn Mawr where the first math class I took piqued my interest. Outside academics, I am also on the rowing team and am an avid knitter! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or just want to talk!
Hello, I’m Valerie Jin from Shanghai, China. I am a chemistry and math double major who is interested in computer science. As you can see, I'm very STEM based so please feel free to email me with any sort of STEM class questions or even random STEM related concerns like Artificial Intelligence, drug development, and so on. By the way, ALL of them are related to math! I love the Bryn Mawr Math Department because everyone is extremely supportive in every aspect. Remember, you’ll always have me as a friend so always reach out to me through emails!
Hi, my name is América Nájera! I am an economics and mathematics double major. I was born in Mexico City but grew up in The Bronx, NY since I was 6 years old. When I first arrived to the states, I did not know a single word in English but was very good at math. Math ultimately became my sanctuary. The more I struggled in English, the more I fell in love with this universal language. Outside of math, I am SGA Co-Treasurer, SFC Co-Coordinator, DMC Co-Coordinator, and an Economics Major Representative. I love going on walks, thrifting, and trying new restaurants! Feel free to email me about anything, I’m always happy to help and hangout!
Hello! My name is Shefali, but most people call me Shef. I grew up in Northern California, and I’m a math major. I fell in love with math when I first took calculus. It felt as though suddenly I could look around and always see some place mathematics would make solving a problem or understanding a phenomenon just a little easier. I really appreciate the Bryn Mawr Math Department — it’s really helped me gain confidence in my ability to do math and has helped me discover my interest in applied mathematics, specifically in Linear Programming. Outside of math, I enjoy long-form improv, Shakespeare plays, Pokémon, Tabletop RPGs, and helping organize weekly substance-free events at Haverford’s Nerd House. Feel free to email me about any questions you have, advice you need, or just to chat. I love talking about math, and I love making new friends!

I’m from Chengdu, China. I’m a math and psych major. I fell in love with math when I was in high school. Though it is struggling to do math sometimes, I like the sense of accomplishment when I solve a struggling problem. I sometimes do sudoku when I feel stressed. I love photography, taking pictures on the street or on campus.
I am from Nanjing, China, and I am a Math major, Japanese and Data Science double minor. I like how Math teaches me to think critically and logically. I also enjoy learning languages and meeting new people!
Hi, I'm Hunter, and I am a Math major and Computer Science/Spanish double minor from Roanoke, Virginia. I was one of those people who thought they were "bad at math" when I was younger, and working with the Bryn Mawr Math Department helped me change my perspective and discover my love for math! The support I've received from both my professors and my fellow students has been invaluable to me, and now I can't really imagine doing anything else. As a result of my own experiences, I'm very passionate about improving early math education. Outside of math, I'm interested in Appalachian Studies and Linguistics; I'm part of the Bryn Mawr Fencing Club; and I love live music, especially punk and metal! Feel free to reach out to me if you need help or support, or if you just want to talk!
Hi Everyone! I'm Alishia (ah-lee-sha), and I am a Math major. I was born in Killeen, TX, but grew up in Anchorage, AK. Growing up, I thought math wasn't for me until I took calculus at Bryn Mawr, and I saw how supportive the math department was towards me when I needed help. My hobbies are cooking, watching K-dramas, and kickboxing. I would love to answer any questions as well.
Hi! I'm Veronica, and I'm from Shenzhen, China. I'm a Math major, and I plan to minor in Chemistry and Linguistics. In my freshman year, I always thought that I would major in Chemistry and minor in Math. But then I found out that math is more attracting and interesting, and it covers various areas, so I’m a Math major now! And I also realized that the Bryn Mawr Math Department is a really warm and supporting place. Outside of math, I love musicals, Japanese animation, kpop music and chatting with my friends. I can't wait to see and make new friends!
