How the media represent or neglect an issue has repercussions for public policy and those affected by it. Media coverage of welfare has declined in recent years, and the issue of welfare is no longer prominent on the political agenda. The lack of attention in the media to the 1996 welfare reform’s well-documented inadequacies and the continuing struggles of welfare recipients and others living in poverty is troubling. Her dissertation will analyze the evolution of media discourse around welfare and welfare recipients from 1990 through 2016.
