The Department of Classical and Near Eastern BMC Painter Medallion Archaeology trains undergraduates and graduate students in the archaeology, art and monuments, and history of the major civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean, Egypt and the Near East. The program is interdisciplinary and encourages students to take advantage of related offerings in Departments of Anthropology, Classics, Geology, History, History of Art, and the Program in the Growth and Structure of Cities. In collaboration with the Departments of Geology, Biology and Anthropology, coursework and laboratory training is offered in Geographic Information Systems. In 2005-06 a concentration in Geoarchaeology will be offered.

The Ella Riegel Memorial Collection of over 6,000 artifacts is used in instruction. Students are encouraged to study material for research and to volunteer with the College Collections staff, who manage the collection.

The department currently supports fieldwork in Greece, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey. Undergraduate majors and graduate students are eligible to participate in these projects. The department also supports students seeking fieldwork experience.
