Poet Nikki Giovanni will provide the keynote address.

A performance by R&B band Valerie Adams and Dimensions will kick off this year's public celebration of Black History Month at Bryn Mawr at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, in Thomas Great Hall. The show will be preceded by a tea, sponsored by Sisterhood and Dining Services' annual Black History Month Dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Acclaimed poet and essayist Nikki Giovanni will deliver the keynote address on Feb. 25, and the series of lectures, performances, discussions and celebrations in honor of Black History Month will culminate in Sisterhood's annual culture show on Feb. 28.

Keynote speaker Nikki Giovanni's Black Feeling, Black Talk, Black Judgment has been called "one of the single most important volumes of modern African-American poetry." Its publication in 1968 made Giovanni a leading figure in the Black Arts Movement, and she has continued to publish influential poetry, essays and interviews ever since. Other highlights of the month include lectures by Bryn Mawr historian Kalala Ngalamulume and Swarthmore sociologist Sarah Willie; a screening of a documentary about rape in the black community with a talk by its director, Aishah Simmons; and dance performances by Sister Mafalda and the Kuumba African Dance Performers and the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble.

The theme of this year's Black History Month program is "Black History Is America's History: Giving Voice to Silence." Series organizers Alnisa Bell '06 and Nkenge Ho-Shing '06 of Sisterhood have worked with numerous co-sponsoring organizations representing diverse interests on campus to put the program together. "We want to stress the theme that black history is America's history," says Ho-Shing. "It's genuinely relevant to everybody, not just a restricted minority of people. We hope that people of all backgrounds will come out to these events."
