PANEL TO EXAMINE CHILEAN COUP'S EFFECT ON LITERATURE

A panel discussion on how the military coup of Sept. 11, 1973, affected Chilean literature will bring two local authorities on the subject to Room 110 of the M. Carey Thomas Library at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26. Roberto Castillo-Sandoval and Carlos Alberto Trujillo, both natives of Chile, will conduct the discussion.

Last September marked the 30th anniversary of the coup, in which the government of socialist leader Salvador Allende was displaced by the repressive regime of General Augusto Pinochet. The event has had a profound effect far beyond the borders of Chile, both inside and outside of Latin America. The U.S. government's support of the coup through covert action by the CIA remains one of the key factors shaping Latin American relations with the United States.

Panelists Castillo-Sandoval and Trujillo are both authorities on Chilean literature. Castillo-Sandoval, a novelist, is an associate professor of Spanish at Haverford College, where he has taught courses on a wide range of topics dealing with Latin America. Trujillo, who has won many awards for poetry, is an associate professor in the department of modern and classical languages and literature of Villanova University.

The program will be conducted in Spanish. All are welcome and refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by the Spanish Department, the Center for International Studies, the Class of 1902 Lecture Fund and the Office of Institutional Diversity.
