CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH CULMINATES IN SISTERHOOD'S ANNUAL CULTURE SHOW
The celebration of Black History Month at Bryn Mawr will culminate in the annual culture show produced by Sisterhood, the African-American student organization, on Saturday, Feb. 28. Rochelle Merilien '06 and Audrey Flattes '07 will direct a cast of students in the production, which will be mounted in Thomas Great Hall at 7 p.m. The show is free and open to the public.
The show will look at African-American history through the eyes of Essence duNoir, played by Alice Goldsberry '07. Essence, a Bryn Mawr student, is visiting her parents' home during Spring Break when the show opens, says Merilien. When she consults her mother and her grandmother, she discovers an oral history stretching all the way back to Africa. Her ancestors' stories illuminate many of the salient issues in African-American history through their reverberations in her own family.
The culture show will feature a step dance as well as traditional storytelling and was written collaboratively by the members of Sisterhood, Merilien says.
