BRYN MAWR MATH TEAM PERFORMS ADMIRABLY IN COMPETITION
A team of student mathematicians representing Bryn Mawr made a strong showing in the Mathematical Association of America's William Lowell Putnam Competition, Professor of Mathematics and team coach Paul Melvin reports. The team, composed of Alicia Jorda '04, Irena Penev '06 and Jennifer Vaughan '04, placed 27th in the contest, which drew 3,615 students from 479 colleges and universities in Canada and the United States.
The results of the competition, held Dec. 6, 2003, were announced last week. Melvin was pleased with the Bryn Mawr team's performance in the competition, which is often dominated by large research universities and technology institutes.
This was the 64th annual Putnam Competition. The contest, which requires students to solve 12 problems in two three-hour sittings, is administered on competitors' home campuses by faculty members. Cash prizes are awarded to both individual and team winners.
