OWLS OUTDOORS PLANS HIKE IN ANDORRA NATURAL AREA APRIL 17
The Athletics and Physical Education Department's Owls Outdoors program will offer Bryn Mawr students, faculty and staff members an opportunity to enjoy spring in the woods on Saturday, April 17, with a hike in the Andorra Natural Area. Transportation to the walk, to be led by Director of Athletics and Physical Education Amy Campbell, will be provided by the Athletics Department. To reserve a space on the van, which will leave Pem Arch at 8 a.m. and return at about noon, e-mail Campbell at acampbel.
The Andorra Natural Area, says Campbell, is a relatively isolated area of Fairmount Park that receives fewer visitors than better-known parts of the park. Once part of the largest nursery on the east coast, the area boasts a rich variety of trees, many of which are labeled, and is an ideal site for bird-watching. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes that provide plenty of support and carry a bottle of water and trail snacks, says Campbell.
The Owls Outdoor program is an initiative directed by Carol Bower, Bryn Mawr's crew coach, to provide a variety of outdoor experiences. Last fall Owls Outdoors sponsored a Wilderness First Aid Class; this semester, the program is sponsoring a physical-education course in walking and orienteering, and there are plans for additional outdoor activities.
