Children, relatives and friends of Bryn Mawr's faculty and staff joined the workforce at Bryn Mawr College last Thursday when the Community Service Office hosted its annual "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day." Girls and boys ages 6 to 16 were invited to spend a day on campus. In an educational workshop about the presidential election, the children nominated Spongebob Squarepants for the nation's top office.
Children toured the campus, learned about and helped out in the workplaces of their parents and other faculty and staff, and attended a workshop where they talked about the upcoming elections and decided what they would do if they were elected president. The children played a game of 'political bingo' that tested their knowledge of elections and the presidency and took part in an athletic workshop. The day ended with a presentation by the children and a reception for children and sponsors.
Children in the election workshop identified several issues for the president to address: the environment, equal access to education, safe driving/roadways, ending war and offering more vacation time for kids and parents. Younger students illustrated their issues on colorful posters that were displayed around Thomas Great Hall. Older students created a skit, which they performed for their parents, about the issues they care about.
The College celebrated "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" one week earlier than the official Ms. Foundation "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day," set for April 22, because the later date falls during a busy time on campus for both students and faculty members.
"The children had a wonderful time learning about the important work of a college," said Debbie Rubin, director of the Community Service Office. "We hope to show them that they can choose to attend college and to work on a college campus when they are older."
