Maypole Dancing
May Day participants and spectators

Bryn Mawr students will briefly set aside their books to gambol on the green at the College's annual May Day celebration on Sunday, May 2. The day's events include the traditional Maypole dancing and breakfast of strawberries and cream, but Traditions Mistresses Tia Burroughs '05 and Dijana Sarzinski '05 looked beyond the borders of Merry Old England for inspiration, assigning this year's celebration a new theme: the Seven Wonders of the World.

With access to information Herodotus didn't have and an eye to cultural inclusiveness, the Traditions Mistresses have redrawn the list of wonders to take in continents (and centuries) not included in the classical list. The wonders to be celebrated on May Day are: The Great Wall of China, Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, India's Taj Mahal and the Statue of Liberty.

"The dining halls will be decorated with representations of the Seven Wonders," says Burroughs, and Bryn Mawr Dining Services will recreate dishes typical of the cultures represented by the structures on the list. "We wanted to use the theme to make it clear that Bryn Mawr's students draw on many cultural traditions," says Burroughs. "As always, we've asked all the student cultural organizations to participate." There will be plenty of opportunities to check out the cultural creations of Bryn Mawr's diverse student population.

The celebration begins at 5:45 a.m., when sophomores rise to collect flowers for seniors' May baskets, and continues throughout the day, with songs, plays, concerts, picnics and the final step sing of the year. The evening will close with the traditional screening of The Philadelphia Story, starring Katharine Hepburn '28, at 10:45 p.m. in Thomas 110.

All events are free and most are open to the general public. The festivities usually draw a substantial crowd from the surrounding community, as well as friends and family of Bryn Mawr’s students, faculty, staff and alumnae. Among the day’s public performances and events:
