BRYN MAWR RUNNER WINS MEDAL IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Bryn Mawr's Joanna Simonis '05 placed third in the 800-meter run in the NCAA Division III Track and Field championship meet held May 29 at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill. She is Bryn Mawr College's first All-American and medalist in track and field.
Simonis, who was competing in the national championship meet for the second year in a row, ran a 2:12.62 qualifying heat at nationals on May 28, breaking both her Bryn Mawr College record and the Centennial Conference record. In the finals on May 29, she ran a 2:14.67 race and finished third overall. "Joanna did a tremendous job this year," said Dan Talbot, Bryn Mawr College track and field coach. "She took her training to the next level and she really learned how to race. She's been an inspiration to her teammates and coaches and I'm really proud of her."
Simonis holds individual school records in the outdoor 800 meters and the 1500 meters. She also has a share in four relay records: the 4 x 400, the 4 x 800, and the distance and sprint medley relays. In indoor track, she holds the 800 meter record and shares the 4 x 200, 4 x 400, 4 x 800 and the distance medley relay records.
