MEMORIAL FOR MICHAEL POWELL TO BE HELD OCT. 22

Paula Fox

Assistant Professor of History Michael Powell will be remembered on Friday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m. in the Goodhart Music Room. Colleagues and friends will gather to share reminiscences of Powell, and music will be provided by the Haverford-Bryn Mawr Chamber Singers; light refreshments will follow in the Goodhart Common Room. Powell, who began teaching at Bryn Mawr in 1999, died on June 8 at the age of 42.

Powell, a polymathic scholar of medieval history and culture, held degrees in divinity and music as well as history. Colleagues praised the creativity of his scholarly work, which drew on his multiple areas of expertise to provide an unusually rich and complex understanding of medieval European culture.

At Bryn Mawr, Powell brought an interdisciplinary approach to courses dealing with court culture, Christianity, the rise of urbanism, homosexuality and food in medieval Europe. In 2003, he received the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award. Students and colleagues recognized him as an energetic, engaging and inspiring teacher.
