ON CAMPUS: CONSCIOUSNESS, COFFEE, CONFLICT, CELEBRATION

Philosophy Colloquium. On Wednesday, Jan. 26, the Philosophy Department's colloquium series will present Shaun Gallagher, professor and chair of philosophy at the University of Central Florida and the editor of the journal Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences. Gallagher's topic is "Before You Know It: Is Consciousness Necessary for Free Actions?" The lecture, to take place in Thomas 224 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., is free and open to all.

Coffee Hour will resume next Friday, Jan. 28, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Thomas Great Hall. The whole campus community is invited to join the informal gathering and nosh on the doughnuts and coffee provided by SGA and the Dean’s Office.

The Diversity Conversations series continues on Friday, Jan. 28, with "How Women Fight: Making Nice at a Women's College." Associate Professor of Psychology Kim Cassidy will lead the discussion, which is open to everyone on campus. Like other events in the series, it will be held at the Multicultural Center from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, and it includes a free lunch.

Farewell Celebration. If books are a scholarly community's lifeblood, the Canaday circulation desk may be Bryn Mawr’s heart. "Despite our good wishes for Anne Slater ['64], we're still a little bit heartbroken at having to bid farewell to the former Head of Circulation Services, who retired Jan. 7 after 31 years of service to the College," says Mark Colvson, coordinator of curriculum and research support and head of user services. From 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, grateful friends and colleagues of Slater will gather in Thomas Great Hall to celebrate her newfound freedom and thank her for her contributions to the life of the College, in and out of the library. If you would like to contribute to a gift for Slater, or if you would like to help with her party, please contact Susan Turkel in Canaday Library, x7467, or e-mail her at sturkel@brynmawr.edu.
