HIP-HOP POET-CRITIC TO DISCUSS RACE AND POWER

Journalist, hip-hop poet and former MTV "Real World" cast member Kevin Powell will deliver the keynote address for this year's celebration of Black History Month on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Thomas Great Hall. Powell will speak on his latest book, Who's Gonna take the Weight?: Manhood, Race and Power in America. Reception and book signing will follow. Admission is free. 

Hailed as one of the most important voices of his generation, Powell has written five previous books and has been published in The Washington Post, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Essence and Vibe. Known for his social commentary, Powell grew up in Jersey City , N.J., and studied political science and English at Rutgers University. He emerged as a student activist, working alongside Sister Souljah on the anti-apartheid movement, and launched a national black youth and student alliance. Powell has lectured at universities across the country, speaking on racism, sexism, black history and hip-hop.

This year's Black History Month at Bryn Mawr College focuses on the profound contributions of the African diaspora to American arts and culture with a Harlem Renaissance theme.
