IN SPORTS: OWLS CLEAN UP IN STATE BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP; LACROSSE SEASON LOOKS UP; FIELD HOCKEY TEAM WINS ACADEMIC AWARDS

Badminton: Senior Ioana Butoi won the Pennsylvania State Badminton Championships on Saturday, March 12, at Albright College, while the BMC team edged out Swarthmore for the Collegiate Team Trophy. The Owls placed first in A, B and C divisions. In the women's A finals, Butoi rallied back after losing the first game 13-10 and then, finding her stride, continued to pound deep clears to the backcourt until her opponent gave up a weak shot and Butoi finished the point with a straight smash or her signature crosscourt drop. The top three players in singles and doubles from Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore and Albright racked up points for each win for their school in pursuit of the collegiate trophy. Bryn Mawr edged out Swarthmore 11-9 to take the gold cup.

Lacrosse: The Owls have flown to victory in two of their first three outings on the lacrosse field. On Friday, March 11, they picked up their first win of the season with a commanding 14-1 victory over the University of Dallas. Bobbie Michals '05 and Jen Lam '06 led Bryn Mawr with four goals each. On Tuesday, March 15, Senior Co-Captain Millie Bond scored three goals to lead the Owls to a 10-7, nonconference win over Wesley College. The Owls return to action this weekend with the annual Seven Sisters Tournament hosted at Bryn Mawr. Their first game is 11 a.m. on Saturday against Wellesley College.

Field Hockey: The Bryn Mawr College Field Hockey team earned a Division III National Academic Team Award from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), and seven individual Owls were named to the NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad for 2004. First-year scholar-athletes Lily Chen, Ashley Dawkins and Emily Phillips, and sophomores Diane Ghrist, Colleen Hughes and Liz Plunkett join junior Katie Maza on the National Academic Squad.

Student-athletes selected to the National Academic Squad have achieved a minimum cumulative 3.30 GPA through the fall semester of the 2004-05 academic year. Teams selected to receive the National Academic Team Award have achieved a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 during the fall semester of the 2004-05 academic year.
