| BLACK MEETS WHITE, MAN MEETS WOMAN,
DANCE MEETS THEATER IN TONGUE SMELL COLOR
Two of Philadelphia's most innovative performance artists, Brenda Dixon Gottschild and Helmut Gottschild, will present "Tongue Smell Color" at the Pembroke Dance Studio on Tuesday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. This humorous but provocative movement play uses the story of an interracial married couple to explore issues of race, age, gender, sex and memory.
Combining body, movement and text, "Tongue Smell Color" draws on Brenda Dixon Gottschild's cultural research as well as her background in avant-garde theater, and artist Hellmut Gottschild's lifelong involvement in performance as a choreographer, dancer and mime. The hourlong piece uses the body as metaphor and sign to explore thresholds and disjunctions as well as bridges and continuities. Each performance of the piece is extended by the audience's dialogue with the performers. Admission is free, but reservations are necessary. Call x5208 for more information.
Brenda Dixon Gottschild, formerly a professional dancer and actor, is professor emerita of performance studies at Temple University and a senior consultant and writer for Dance Magazine. Helmut Gottschild, professor emeritus in dance at Temple University, was the co-founder of Philadelphia's Group Motion and founder of Zero Moving Dance Company.
This event is co-sponsored by the Dance Program, Feminist and Gender Studies, the Center for Visual Culture and the Center for Ethnicities, Communities and Social Policy.
