LOOKS AT CHALLENGES FACING URBAN SCHOOLS
Parents, teachers and community members concerned about the quality of education in urban public schools are invited to attend a free conference at Bryn Mawr College, Thursday, March 31, to Saturday, April 2.
The conference, titled "Educating All Children: Challenges, Possibilities and No Child Left Behind," will be held at Wyndham.
For a complete conference program, including biographical sketches of the speakers and abstracts of the papers to be presented, visit www.brynmawr.edu/ethnicities/educonference. Admission is free, but registration is necessary. Act 48 continuing-education credit is available for Pennsylvania teachers for a fee of $10 per session. To register, call 610-526-5030 or e-mail ksulpizi@brynmawr.edu.
On Thursday, March 31, at 8 p.m., Professor of Education Linda Darling-Hammond of Stanford University will open the conference with a keynote address: "What Will It Really Take to Leave No Child Behind?" On Friday and Saturday, nationally acclaimed experts in education, law and psychology will participate in a series of panel discussions exploring the challenges facing our schools today: inadequate funding for inner-city schools; English as a second language; standards and testing; and recruiting and retaining qualified teachers.
Funds to support the conference were provided by Bryn Mawr, Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges.
For more information, contact Professor of Psychology Leslie Rescorla at 610-526-7318.
