ON CAMPUS: FORAGING FOR EASTER EGGS, ALLEN ON CULTURAL TRANSITIONS, GREEN BIKES

Easter Eggs. On Easter Sunday, March 27, at 1 p.m., the Bryn Mawr-Haverford Episcopal Campus Ministry will sponsor an all-aged Easter-egg Hunt to raise funds for AIDS relief in Malawi. Participants will hunt for candy and candy-filled eggs and a variety of prizes, and event organizers promise an equitable distribution of candy at the end of the day. Egg hunters may use their own baskets or opt for decorated bags that will be provided. Contact Sara D'Angio (sdangio@brynmawr.edu) or x5681 to register for the event, which costs $2 per participant.

Faculty Research Talk. Professor of Russian and Comparative Literature Elizabeth Cheresh Allen will provide the latest in the provost's series of Faculty Research Talks on Tuesday, March 29, at 4:30 p.m. in Wyndham's Ely Room. Allen's topic: "Uncharted Waters: The Ins and Outs of Cultural Transition."

Allen, says Provost Ralph Kuncl, "will consider several interpretations of cultural transformation drawn from history and social science." She distinguishes between "times of transition in, when the norms and values of a nascent cultural period are forming, and times of transition out, when the norms and values of an established cultural period are fading, but no new ones have yet emerged." While transition out periods might be viewed as times of enormous creative freedom for artists and intellectuals, Allen argues that they are more likely to bring a disorienting sense of cultural anomie and purposelessness.

Refreshments will be served before and after the talk.

Green Bikes. Now that spring has sprung, the BMC Greens encourage all members of the community to take advantage of their check-out-a-bike program, administered by the staff of Canaday Library, which advises against simultaneous reading and cycling. Two bicycles are available; potential cyclists can check their availability through Tripod, the Tri-Co online card catalog, using the keyword "greens bicycle." The bikes can be checked out at the circulation desk in Canaday.
