SUMMER PROGRAMS PREPARE STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE

Student Discussion

Applications are now being accepted for a series of summer programs at Bryn Mawr that prepare female high-school students for college. For the first time this year, Bryn Mawr will present Science for College, June 26-July 9, in addition to the already-established Writing for College, June 26-July 16; and Understanding College Admissions, July 17-22.

Courses are presented in a workshop setting with guest speakers, field trips and an opportunity to experience college life. Participants may choose to live in a residence hall and take advantage of the College's eight-lane swimming pool, tennis courts and fitness center. To download an application, go to www.brynmawr.edu/summerprograms

Science for College draws on Bryn Mawr's world-renowned faculty and state-of-the-art laboratories to provide an exciting learning experience for college-bound students. Participants meet and work with distinguished scientists in psychology, chemistry and geology. Guided by an instructor and a Bryn Mawr science major, each student will complete labs and develop portfolios in a supportive environment.

Writing for College offers a choice of two "strands": Creative Writing (short stories, poetry, essays and creative nonfiction) and Urban Landscapes, which explores the role of the city in literature, film, photography and music. Both courses provide opportunities for students to improve their reading, writing and critical-thinking skills.

Understanding College Admissions is open to both residential and commuting students. This one-week program was designed to reduce anxiety about the admissions process and to coach students in writing college admission essays and in improving their interviewing skills. Through interactive workshops and personality assessment materials, participants learn how to identify colleges that match their interests and goals. The workshop is taught by professionals from the Bryn Mawr College Admissions Office and by LEADERSHIP, Inc., the Philadelphia region's premiere leadership-development organization.
