Davidson Advises Congress. Last month, Professor of Russian and Second Language Acquisition Dan Davidson appeared before the U.S. House of Representatives' Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, Export Financing and Related Programs. Davidson, one of the nation's premier experts on second-language acquisition and educational exchange with the former Soviet Republics, urged lawmakers to invest in education aid to countries in Southeastern Europe and Eurasia. He cited as models three successful programs overseen by the American Councils for International Education, ACTR/ACCELS, of which he is president. Such exchanges, Davidson argued, are vital in combating government corruption and cultivating democratic ideals.

Countering Bullying of LGBT Students. On Wednesday, May 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research will present a workshop led by Jane Riese, the Director of Bullying Prevention Services at Family-Child Resources, Inc. in York, Pa. The presentation, which is free and open to all, will take place in the GSSWSR's Katharine Lower Lounge.
Though often overlooked by schools, LGBT students, or those believed to be among that population, are often targets of severe and continuous bullying, harassment and even violence, Riese says. The workshop will provide a psychological overview of the American perspective on homosexuality; explore the special concerns and risks faced by LBGT youth in elementary, intermediate, middle and high schools; and provide numerous practical suggestions and resources for professionals and parents who are concerned.
