ON CAMPUS: SHOFAR BLOWING, SPANISH CULTURAL SERIES, FACULTY-STAFF RECEPTION

Shofar, So Good. The Bryn Mawr College Campus Hillel, weather permitting, will have its annual shofar blowing in front of the Bryn Mawr College Campus Center, Monday afternoon, Sept. 5 (or 1 Elul, in the Jewish calendar), from 12:10 to 1:15 p.m.

The shofar, explains event organizer Peter Koelle, is a Jewish ritual instrument, crafted from the horn of a ram. It is sounded every day except Shabbat during the Jewish month of Elul, the month before Rosh Ha-Shanah, the beginning of the Jewish New Year. Everybody is invited to stop, relax, play a shofar or just listen, says Koelle, and anyone who has a shofar is encouraged to bring one.

Spanish Cultural Series Begins. On Sept. 5 at 7 p.m., Lecturer in Spanish Peter Koelle will open this year's Spanish Department Cultural Series. Koelle will deliver a lecture titled "La Cultura Sefardí: una Herencia Ibérica." Participants in the series include three other members of the Bryn Mawr College faculty, Inés Arribas and Dina Brenda from the Spanish Department and Daniela Sander from the Growth and Structure of Cities Program. The guest lecturers include photographer and author Paola Nogueras '84, Diego Armus of the History Department at Swarthmore College, Executive Director of Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas Yolanda Alcorta, Silvia Nagy-Semi of the Spanish Department at Villanova University, and Luisa Sosa of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at LaSalle University.

With the exception of the Latin American Dance Workshop with Inés Arribas in the Goodhart Music Room, all programs take place in Room 110 of the M. Carey Thomas Library. Please consult the Spanish Department Web page at http://www.brynmawr.edu/spanish to find the schedule of events. All are welcome.

Faculty-Staff Reception Tuesday. President Nancy J. Vickers will entertain faculty, staff and their families at a reception in Thomas Great Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. This annual event offers a chance to meet new colleagues and renew old friendships in a convivial setting; all members of the faculty and staff are invited.
