CANADAY LIBRARY TO HOST BOOK LAUNCH

Miegs' Book Cover

On Thursday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m., Canaday Library's Class of 1912 Rare Book Room will be the site of a book launch. Talonbooks will host a reception to celebrate the publication of Beyond Recall, which collects the last writings of artist-writer Mary Meigs '39. The book's editor, Lise Weil, will speak at the event, which is free and open to the public.

Meigs, who studied art at the New York's Art Students League after serving as a WAVE in World War II, became a highly visible advocate for the rights of lesbians with the publication of Lily Briscoe: A Self-Portrait in 1981. After the critical and popular success of Lily Briscoe, Meigs published The Medusa Head (1983), The Box Closet (1987) and The Time Being (1997). In 1990, she appeared in the Canadian documentary The Company of Strangers, a film about a group of elderly women stranded in the wilderness and how they survive this ordeal. Her book In the Company of Strangers (1991) describes her experiences during the filming of the movie. Throughout her later life Meigs, increasingly prominent as a writer, became a spokesperson for elderly lesbians, battling against prejudices of age, class and gender. She died on November 15, 2002.
