ON CAMPUS THIS WEEK: MELLON FELLOW SPEAKS, WORK-FAMILY DISCUSSION, PALESTINE NIGHT, BOOK LAUNCH FOR McBRIDE SCHOLAR

Mellon Fellow in International Studies to Speak. Isabelle Barker, Bryn Mawr's Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in International Studies, will give students and colleagues a glimpse of her research on Friday, March 17, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Dorothy Vernon Room in Haffner. Her topic: "Pentecostals of the World Unite!, or An Exploration of the Relationship Between Economic Globalization and the World's Fastest Growing Religion."

President Seeks Advice on Work-Family Issues. President Nancy J. Vickers has convened a working group to advise her on work/family issues on campus. What can the College do to create a more family-friendly environment, one that particularly addresses the challenges faced by faculty members? This Friday, March 17, two members of the advisory group are holding a brainstorming session that is open to the entire campus community. That will be followed by a series of focus groups with a random sample of faculty.

Associate Professor of Political Science Marissa Martino Golden and Associate Professor of Psychology Kim Cassidy will open the meeting with a brief overview of the issues that faculty parents (especially mothers) face nationwide, and then open the floor to elicit the experiences and recommendations of members of the community.

The meeting, to be held in Thomas 223 from 2:30 to 4 p.m., is the sixth in a series of sessions on "Re-thinking Parenting," co-sponsored by the Program in Gender and Sexuality and the Center for Science and Society.

Palestine Night. The University of Pennsylvania's Y'allah Dance Troupe will perform and give a workshop in Middle Eastern dance techniques at "A Palestinian Night: Part II" on Saturday, March 18, from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in Thomas Great Hall. The event will also feature Arabic catering and a talk by Sarah Farahat '05, who has recently returned from Palestine. The event is sponsored by Students for Justice in Palestine; for more information, contact heideh@brynmawr.edu or nbarclay@brynmawr.edu.

Book Launch Celebrates Student Author's Publication. On Wednesday, March 22, the publication of Brother Juniper, a charming tale by Diane Gibfried '06 of a Franciscan monk who is generous to a fault, will be celebrated at a book-launch party at the Bookshop from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Copies of the children's book, published by Houghton Mifflin, will be available for purchase, and Gibfried will be on hand with an autograph pen at the ready. For more information about Gibfried and the Bryn Mawr creative-writing course that led to the publication, see "McBride Scholar's Book to Hit Stores March 13" in the March 2 issue of Bryn Mawr Now.
