STUDENTS FROM PHILLY AREA TO PRESENT RESEARCH AT ASIAN-STUDIES CONFERENCE AT HAVERFORD

The newly formed Asian Studies Consortium, a branch of the Greater Philadelphia Human Studies Council that draws together students and scholars of Asian studies from 13 Philadelphia-area colleges, will sponsor an undergraduate research conference this Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Haverford College's Chase Auditorium.

The consortium was organized by Associate Provost Suzanne Spain, who co-chairs Bryn Mawr's East Asian Studies Department. "We created a steering group of Asian studies faculty members from the 13 participating schools and members of the GPHSC," Spain says, "and we decided that the best thing we could do with our grant from the GPSHC was to sponsor an undergraduate conference. We see it as an excellent way for faculty and undergraduates specializing in Asian studies throughout the region to meet one another. And we are excited about showcasing the work of our students. This approach will not reproduce the activities of the Asian Studies centers that a number of schools have."

A program committee issued a call for papers — each participating school could submit two — and ultimately chose the six papers that will be presented Saturday. Presenters are from Bryn Mawr, Haverford, LaSalle University, Saint Joseph's University, Ursinus College and Villanova University.

Spain encourages all faculty and students to attend, and noted "there's a free lunch for everybody who comes." The schedule:

  • 9:30-10 a.m. Registration and coffee
  • 10-11:30 a.m. Welcoming Remarks; Session One: Language and Power

Sara Biondi, Ursinus College, "The Re-Invention of Japanese Women's Language"

Winnie Tang '06, Bryn Mawr College, "Linguistic Imperialism in Medium of Instruction Policies In Pre- and Post-1997 Hong Kong"

  • 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Lunch, free to all conference attendees
  • 1-2:15 p.m. Session Two: Identity and Representation on Page and on Screen

Vanessa L. Pettiford, Villanova University, "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Leader of the Shoujo Revolution"

Janine Pare, Haverford College, "Labyrinths of the Mind: Examining Post-War Memory and the Politics of Repression in Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle"

  • 2:15-2:45 p.m. Break
  • 2:45-3:45 p.m. Session Three: Outsiders in East Asia in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Maura Elizabeth Cunningham, Saint Joseph's University, "A Light 'of Feeble Candle Power': Medical Missionaries in Late Imperial China"
