ROUND ONE OF BI-CO STUDENT THEATER FESTIVAL OPENS TONIGHT

Last fall, when Bryn Mawr-Haverford Theater Program Director Mark Lord issued a call for proposals for a student theater festival, he got so many strong proposals that he decided to split the festival into two bills over two weekends. The Second Occasional Bi-College Student Theater Festival: Round One will play this Thursday, March 30, Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Goodhart Theater. Round Two will play Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 6, 7 and 8, at the same curtain times. The show is free to Tri-College students, faculty and staff with ID; tickets are $5 for the general public.

"The idea for the festival grew out of the realization that [Technical Director of Theater] Hiroshi Iwasaki and I wanted opportunities for students to be able to test their evolving skills and tastes in a context in which they have access to guidance and material support," says Lord. "Rose Bochansky '99 is filling in while Hiroshi's on leave and she's been a huge help doing design and management."

More than 40 Bryn Mawr and Haverford students are involved in the productions. Seven short pieces are featured over the course of both weekends, including "The Adventures Of," an original work written and directed by Nora Sidoti '07 and Haverfordian Nathan Vogel '06, and "Replika," a physical-theater piece adapted by Bi-Co Theater veteran Anna Marciniak '06 from a Polish work. Vanessa Poggioli '07 serves as stage manager for both rounds, with assistance from Christina Smith '09.

Round One, opening tonight, includes "The Man Who Couldn't Dance" by Jason Katims, directed by Emma Ferguson, Haverford '09; "The Adventures Of" written and directed by Vogel and Sidoti; "Deliver Us Not, or Birth, Where Is Thy Sting?" by Lee Howard and Greg Gamble, directed by Shannon Friday '06; and "Protest" by Vaclav Havel, directed by Vijaya Thakur '08.

Round Two, playing next weekend, features "The Actor's Nightmare" and "Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All to You" by Christopher Durang, directed by Nick Morgan, Haverford '06, Jorge Rodriguez, Haverford '07, and Abby Sayre '08; and "Replika" by Jozef Szajna, directed by Marciniak.
