Owls Win Honors from Centennial Conference And The Philadelphia Inquirer
Three Bryn Mawr athletes have recently won significant honors - one for sportsmanship from the Centennial Conference and two for athletic and academic performance from The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Amy Johnson '07, a three-sport standout athlete at Bryn Mawr, was awarded the Centennial Conference's Women's Sportsmanship Award at yesterday's Centennial Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meeting. Johnson, a math major who currently competes as a defender on the Bryn Mawr lacrosse team, was named all-conference for her efforts in both field hockey and basketball in 2005-06.
The Bryn Mawr Athletic Association, in its nomination of Johnson, praised her as "an athlete with a positive attitude, a striving spirit, [who] behaves with grace whether she wins or loses, but most importantly . who treats everyone around her with an immense amount of respect." Johnson is the first junior in Bryn Mawr's history to score 1,000 points on the basketball court, but, her teammates say, is modest about that achievement and never sacrifices her team spirit to her own ego.
Last Sunday's edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer named two members of the Bryn Mawr swim team, Meg Folcarelli '07 and Katie Klenn '06, to its all-academic teams.

Sports information directors from 28 Philadelphia-area institutions of all three NCAA divisions chose the teams on the basis of student-athletes' grades and athletic performance. The Inquirer's academic teams for each winter sport honor the students who were best able to balance athletics with academics, while performing at a high level in both.
Folcarelli completed her third season with the swim team this past winter. She will enter her senior season in 2006-07 ranked in the all-time top 10 at Bryn Mawr in three freestyle events (6th in the 1650, 8th in the 500 and 10th in the 1000). A double major in French and Italian, Folcarelli received the Bryn Mawr Captain's Award in 2004-05 for her leadership and performance on Head Coach Judy Wolfe's swim team.

Katie Klenn, who is featured elsewhere in this issue of Bryn Mawr Now as the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship, was a major contributor in the freestyle events this year for the Bryn Mawr swim squad. The lone senior on the 2005-06 Owl swim team, Klenn completed her second season swimming at Bryn Mawr this past winter. A versatile swimmer, Klenn competed in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events as well as the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relay teams.
Outside of the pool, Klenn received Bryn Mawr's Summer of Service Award and the Eleanor Nahan Price for Excellence in Italian. She works as a peer mentor on campus.
Folcarelli and Klenn, who were both named to the Centennial Conference's Academic Honor Roll in February, were two of only 11 women's swimmers honored by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (PHILLY-SIDA) and the Philadelphia Inquirer. The two organizations will team up once again in the spring for the third installment of the Academic All-Area teams.
