| On Campus: Hepburn in the Library, Sounding the Shofar, County Fair
Hepburn in the Library. In her 1985 Commencement Convocation address, Katharine Hepburn '28 recalled long hours spent in the Bryn Mawr Library. In honor of the launch of the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center this weekend, the library staff has brought her – or at least her image – back. A small exhibition of photos of Hepburn and of her mother, Katharine Houghton Hepburn '99, is now on display in the foyer of Canaday library. The exhibit contains photos of Hepburn in a number of Broadway plays, as well as a Bryn Mawr yearbook that contains Hepburn's picture and some rare images of her performances in undergraduate theatrical productions. The exhibition is open during library hours.
Shofar Away. The Bryn Mawr College Campus Hillel, weather permitting, will have its annual shofar blowing in front of the Bryn Mawr College Campus Center, Tuesday, September 12 (19 Elul), from 12:10 to 1:15 p.m.
The shofar is a Jewish ritual instrument crafted from the horn of a ram. It is sounded every day except Shabbat during the Jewish month of Elul, the month before Rosh Ha-Shanah, the beginning of the Jewish New Year. Everybody is invited to stop, relax, play a shofar, or just listen. Anyone who has a shofar is encouraged to bring one.
County Fair. On Wednesday, Sept. 13, President Nancy J. Vickers will host a Bryn Mawr College “County Fair” for all members of the campus community from noon to 3 p.m. on Merion Green. Lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m., and members of the College community will staff carnival midway games that offer prizes to winners. Other attractions: a petting zoo, square dancing with a live band, a flea market and the first annual Bryn Mawr bake-off.
Proceeds from the flea market will benefit the Staff Association and Professor of Chemistry Susan White's project to bring new textbooks to schools in the West African country of Togo. To donate items for sale, take them to Merion basement during business hours on Monday, Sept. 11, and Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Bryn Mawr Dining Services' Willie Mae Taylor, Bob Hudoka, Mark Cugini and Dave Woodruff will judge the bake-off, which will have two categories: brownies and apple pie. Entries must be received at Wyndham on Wednesday, Sept. 13, by 10:30 a.m.
