On Campus: Blood Drive, Visual Culture, Staff Association, Calling All Creative Minds

New Eligibility Rules Mean More People Can Participate in Campus Blood Drive. The Red Cross will take over Thomas Great Hall to conduct a blood drive on Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. To register, go to www.pleasegiveblood.org/donate and enter your e-mail address, date of birth and sponsor code, 5X03. Click on the time period that you want to make your appointment.

Acting Athletic Director Jody Law, who is coordinating the effort, notes that the Red Cross has significantly loosened travel and medical restrictions this year, so people who have not been eligible before may now be able to donate. Information about eligibility criteria is available on the registration Web site or at 215-451-4363. Law also reminds donors to eat before giving blood and suggests eating iron-rich foods such as liver, most meats, prunes, apricots, spinach, 100 percent fortified cereal, Raisin Bran and Cream of Wheat cereals for a week before donating.

Visual Culture Colloquia Resume. The Center for Visual Culture's weekly colloquium series has resumed with an ambitious schedule of lectures by a broadly interdisciplinary group of speakers. The group includes academics of many stripes as well as Philadelphia Museum of Art curator Joseph Rishel, who will discuss the creation of the current PMA exhibition "The Arts in Latin America, 1492-1820." The colloquia take place in Thomas 224 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. each Thursday; light refreshments are served. For a complete schedule, see the CVC Web page.

Staff Association to Meet. The BMC Staff Association will hold its first general meeting of the academic year on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. in Thomas Great Hall. Salaries and benefits are on the agenda. Speakers include Chief Administrative Officer Jerry Berenson, who will give an update on the most recent salary survey and market adjustments to staff salaries; Benefits Manager Marty Mastascusa, who will discuss Horizon Services, the College's employee assistance program; and a representative of the Blue Cross wellness program. Doughnuts, soft pretzels, coffee and tea will be served.

Express Yourself. The editors of the campus arts journal Kaleidoscope are accepting submissions for the next issue from Bryn Mawr students, faculty and staff. The publication embraces a variety of creative media including visual and literary arts, and for the first time this year will include a CD with audible art forms. Submissions for the magazine are due Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 5 p.m.; submissions for the CD are due on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 5 p.m. Submissions may be in either electronic or paper form. If you are interested in contributing to the CD, e-mail lmengesha@brynmawr.edu or sisrael@brynmawr.edu; electronic media may be e-mailed to the same addresses. Campus-mail hard copy to Box C-728 or Box C-294.
