On Campus: Party, Diversity and Architecture, Benefits Explained, Chilean Consul, Jewelry

Holiday Cheer in the Great Hall. The hidden talents of Bryn Mawr's staff will be revealed at the Staff Association's annual holiday fair on Friday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Thomas Great Hall. Staff members will offer their arts and crafts for holiday shopping while students, faculty and staff socialize. Refreshments will be served. The event will feature a 50-50 drawing to benefit Laurel House, a shelter for domestic-abuse survivors. The Staff Association will also be collecting donations of canned food for Philabundance: especially sought after during the holidays are canned sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce and baby formula, as well as boxes of macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and stuffing mix.

Diversity and the Built Environment. "Beyond the Welsh Castle: Bryn Mawr, Its Architecture and Diversity" is the topic of the upcoming Diversity Conversation on Friday, Dec. 1, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Multicultural Center. The conversation will be led by Access Services Coordinator Stephanie Bell; architectural historian Jeff Cohen, a senior lecturer in Growth and Structure of Cities; architect Chris Gluesing, Facilities Services' assistant director for projects and planning; Shayna Israel '08, who was involved in last year's mural project in the Women's Center; and Trecia Pottinger '03, a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies at the University of Minnesota who is researching black suburbanization on the Main Line. The conversation is open to all; lunch will be served.

New Rules for Flexible Spending Acccounts Explained. Assistant Director of Human Resources Marty Mastascusa will be available in Campus Center Room 200 on Monday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon to answer any questions that eligible employees may have about flexible spending accounts. Open Enrollment for the 2007 Flexible Spending Account runs through Dec. 15.

The information session is intended to give employees a better understanding of what medical- and dependent-care expenses are reimbursable and the potential tax savings. Eligible expenses can now be incurred 2 1/2 months after the end of the calendar year, reducing the "use it or lose it" risk that may have discouraged participation in past years.

Chilean Consul Speaks. On Monday, Dec. 4, the Spanish Department's weekly cultural series will present a special guest: José Luis Morales Molyneux, the consul general of the Republic of Chile. Molyneux will deliver a talk titled "Chile y Filadelfia: una Relación Especial" at 7 p.m. in Thomas 110. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Holiday Rocks. Earrings, necklaces and more will be offered at the Geology Department's annual mineral jewelry sale on Thursday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Campus Center. The sale will benefit the Professor Edward H. Watson Fund for Bryn Mawr College Geology Students, which funds scholarships for field study, research expenses and travel to meetings. Samples are on exhibit in the second-floor hall of Park Science Building in Case 21.
