Bryn Mawr basketball picked up its first win over conference rival Swarthmore in 14 seasons on Tuesday, Jan, 29. Junior co-captain Katie Driscoll (Little Neck, N.Y./Townsend Harris) grabbed her first double-double of the season as the Owls edged by the Garnet 53-50 in Schwartz Gymnasium. For the game, Driscoll bucketed 10 and grabbed 10 rebounds. The last time the Owls defeated Swarthmore was in the 1992-93 season.
Chipping in a helping hand was senior co-captain Amy Johnson and sophomore Jessica Allen, who had 12 and 11 points, respectively. Allen also added 8 rebounds as Johnson grabbed 7.
The Owls ended the game shooting 15 of 48 from the floor and 4 of 12 from beyond the arch as Swarthmore made 20 of 64 from the floor and 3 of 19 from three-point land. The Owls held a 19 of 30 (63.3%) to 7 of 12 (58.3%) lead at the line as well as muscling out three more rebounds (45 to 42) than the Garnet.
Swarthmore junior Karen Berk had game-highs with 21 points and 20 rebounds, yet the Garnet could not overcome a 16-point second-half deficit as Bryn Mawr rolled to victory. Fuhr added 10 for the Garnet.
Bryn Mawr improves to 4-12 overall and 1-9 in the Centennial Conference as the Garnet fall to 4-13 overall and 1-11 in conference play. The Owls return to action on Jan. 25, as they travel down Lancaster Avenue to do battle with Haverford; tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
