Dancers in Pallabi Chakravorty's piece |
The faculty of the Bryn Mawr College Dance Program present an ambitious and eclectic night of dance featuring everything from traditional Indian dance to a premiere performance set to the music of Queen. This year's faculty concert will be held Friday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Goodhart Theater. The concert is free and open to the public and reservations are not required. For further information, call the Arts Program at 610-526-5210.
Highlights of this year's program:
Pallabi Chakravorty draws on classical Indian dance and pedestrian movement to explore the complex relationship of an immigrant to her past as expressed in bodily experience in a new semi-autobiographical work, "Remembered Rhythms."
Hoofer Timothy Yue puts on his electronic tap shoes and creates the sounds of legendary jazz percussionist Max Roach and Indian tabla music with his feet.
Renee Banson presents a movement essay on commercialism and media images in "Greed, Image and Bling Bling,"which includes a performance by Director of Dance Linda Caruso Haviland.
New faculty member Naomi Pressman performs a character study, "Natasha," to an original sound collage.
Acclaimed choreographer Myra Bazell presents a new male duet, "Tide."
Rebecca Malcolm-Naib premieres "Masquerade," a solo about power and facades set to the music of Queen.
Rounding out the performance will be a lively performance of the classical Indian dance form Bharatanatyam by students of Ramaa Ramesh.
