Basketball: Owls Sink Talons into Fords
Three Players Record Double-Doubles
For the first time in school history three Bryn Mawr basketball players recorded double-doubles in one game. The trifecta of Jessica Allen '09, Shanika Bridges-King '10, and Amy Johnson '07 paced the Owls as they romped Haverford 66-51 in Centennial Conference action.
Natalie Richman got Haverford on the board first as she connected with a layup 26 seconds into the game. On the ensuing possession, Katie Driscoll '08 drained three of her 10 points of the night as she connected from downtown.
Over the next couple minutes both teams exchanged baskets before two baskets by Allen and two good free-throws from Bridges-King gave the Owls a 12-6 cushion as 12:33 ticks were left in the half.
Haverford battled back and tied the game at 14 with 7:21 to play as Brittany Lattisaw '09 found the bottom of the net after kissing glass on a layup. Bryn Mawr regained and held onto the lead until back-to-back shots from the charity stripe by Sara Cram '10 gave the game its third tie at 3:28.
Bryn Mawr would then go on a 9-0 run to close out the first half as Bridges-King connected on three layups and one free throw. The Owls took a 29-20 lead into the locker room. Bridges-King led all scoring in the first half with 13 points and nine rebounds; Allen and Driscoll tallied 7 apiece.
Coming out of the locker room with the support of the student body, Bryn Mawr kicked off the second half on a 6-2 run given them a commanding 35-23 lead. Haverford would pull with in nine points with 13:49 left before three back-to-back buckets pushed the Owls 16 points above the Fords.
At 10:30 to play, Bryn Mawr saw its largest lead of the game, 18, as Allen found the bottom of the net off a layup. The Owls would go on to hold the lead en route to their third conference win, the most since Bryn Mawr joined the Centennial back in 1992.
Allen ended the night scoring a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds as Bridges-King finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds as she moves within 7 points of tying Emily Brondyke '97 as Bryn Mawr's all-time leading scorer with one game left tin the season.
The Owls extended their lead to as many as 18 points with 10:56 to go after going on a 10-0 run over a 3:11 span. Haverford couldn't close the gap to less than 10 points the rest of the game, as Bryn Mawr went on to the 66-51 win.
The Owls held their own under the net as they out-rebounded the Fords 50-39 while shooting 50 percent (4-for-8) from three-point land.
Haverford was led by Abby Scattergood '07 as she registered her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Lattisaw and Cram recorded 14 and 12 points, respectively, as Lattisaw added six rebounds.
The victory improves Bryn Mawr's record to 6-18 overall and 3-14 in Centennial play as Haverford dips to 5-17 and 3-13 with the loss. The Owls travel to McDaniel College on Thursday, Jan. 15, for a make-up game and close out their season; tipoff is set for 7 p.m. <Back to Bryn Mawr Now 2/15/2007
