BMC's New Journal of Civic Engagement
Accepting Submissions from College Community
Thanks to a grant from the Surdna Foundation, the Office of Civic Engagement will launch a new kind of campus publication this spring. The Journal of Civic Engagement will publish submissions from members of the Bryn Mawr College community who have been active in their communities and are willing to share their reflections on their experiences.
Editors hope that all sectors of the campus – students, faculty and staff – will be represented among contributors. Submissions should be about 1,000 words, but otherwise can take a variety of forms, says Civic Engagement Office Co-Director Nell Anderson. She gives some examples of writings appropriate for the journal:
- Accounts of community service, activism, political engagement
- Reflections from field experiences in academic courses
- Shared writing by partners in a civic engagement activity
- Journal entries
- Letters to someone with whom the writer has had a partnership in civic engagement
The editorial board of the journal includes Intercultural Affairs Program Coordinator Vanessa Christman, Senior Lecturer in English and Director of Writing Support Services
Gail Hemmeter; Amanda Root '08, research assistant, in the Empowering Learners Partnership Program, and Julie Zaebst, Praxis Coordinator/Trainer in the Civic Engagement Office.
The submission deadline for the first issue of the journal is Monday, March 5, at 4 p.m. Editors encourage prospective contributors to send abstracts or summaries of their article ideas to the committee in advance. Submission guidelines are posted at http://www.brynmawr.edu/ceo/documents/
submissionguidelines.doc; submissions should be addressed to Vanessa Christman.
