On Friday, March 30, Canaday Library's Special Collections staff will host a reception to mark the opening of a new exhibition of artists' books, tilted "reBound: Contemporary Artists' Responses to 18th and 19th Century Ticketed American Bindings." The reception, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the lobby of Canaday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibition will be on display through May 11, during regular library hours.
"A binding 'ticket' is a very small printed tag placed inside the book that identifies the binder," explains Seymour Adelman Head of Special Collections Eric Pumroy. "The focus of the bookbinding history exhibition (Bound and Determined) is on identifying the work of individual bookbinders, for which tickets are the best form of evidence."
reBound is a collaboration between the Bryn Mawr College Special Collections Department and the Philadelphia Center for the Book. The Center, formed in 2004, promotes the book as a vital contemporary art form and as a catalyst for inspiration, education and creative expression. Its diverse membership includes book artists, collectors, teachers, writers, librarians, book dealers and art professors. The works being exhibited are newly-created pieces that respond to the exhibition, Bound and Determined: Identifying American Bookbindings, on display in Canaday Library's Rare Book Room through May 2007.
Both exhibitions are supported by the Friends of the Bryn Mawr College Library.
